Trewirgie Junior School

Could you survive war and conflict?

This term we journey back in time to WW2, where we examine the causes and repercussions of the outbreak of war around the world. What was it like to be a Jew? How did people keep safe and bomb proof their homes? How did youngsters feel, being separated from their loved ones? What have nations learned from this and how has it changed our lives today?

As part of the children’s learning we will also look at the war and conflict that exists in our world today, such as the war in Ukraine, and the impact it is having on the world today.

Throughout our topic we will explore, who was the most significant person in WWII and why, who was the bravest, why does war still happen today and what countries do to prevent this.

Our topic will culminate in the production of an illustrated poetry book with the very best of our children’s War portraits and some emotive poetry and story recounts from our imagined experiences of war.  The children will go out into the community to sell these to raise funds for the Ukrainian refugees, leaving a positive and lasting legacy of hope and empathy towards our war-torn neighbours.

Through this project the children will both sing and dance to express the mood and emotion of their shared experiences and in this way learn how to build resilience, empathy, positivity and become socially adept citizens of the future.
