Trewirgie Junior School

Modern Foreign languages

At Trewirgie Junior School, children are taught about a variety of cultures and traditions, which enables them to develop a genuine appreciation, understanding and respect for difference and diversity. We believe it is important to cultivate a love of language learning and curiosity for other cultures around the world.

The Modern Foreign Language that is taught at Trewirgie Junior School is Spanish, which is taught through three main strands of language learning: listening and oracy; literacy and intercultural understanding. Across the key stages during PPA sessions, throughout the year, pupils are taught to build on their previous knowledge and develop their language skills.  A specialist teacher from the local Secondary School teaches in Year 6 throughout the summer term. By the time pupils leave Trewirgie Junior School, pupils will be equipped with a solid foundation of language learning, providing the opportunity for pupils to taking this further should they choose in the future.

The pandemic has affected the school's delivery of this subject, especially as we have had to focus on closing the gaps in core subjects.
