Development of character
At Trewirgie we believe that our curriculum gives children a wide range of opportunities. The school encourages children to step out of their comfort zones, try something new, aspire, push and challenge. The school curriculum is developed around adventurous learning where the learning journey is not always straight forward. This encourages perseverance, trouble shooting and learning from mistakes. We have high expectations of children's conduct, attitudes and behaviour. Our legacy curriculum aims to develop children's social conscience and use this to make a difference, have an impact, and leave a legacy.
Many of the aspects of our school that contribute to this are intangible. On a visit they can be seen, felt and heard. Below are a few examples of how we develop children's characters.
We take part in the Lego League programme. This encourages children to build and programme Lego robots, along with designing an innovation project, to overcome a world problem. On the day the children present their robot design and innovation project to a panel of naval officers. This opportunity enables children to develop higher order thinking skills, perseverance and significant skills on a wide range of fronts.

As part of a team of children, we have recently been invited to participate in the further development of a local bike track. 'The Track' is the biggest bike track in Cornwall. Together, a group of children have been involved in a weekly challenge of handwork, teamwork and planning. Through such a project the bond that the children can develop through a shared project can be really character building.

Living in Cornwall, it is important to experience life beyond the county. Each year we take a group of children to London to sing at Wembley. The Voice in A Million experience, is one that will shape children and build in them a possible to desire to pursue a career in singing.

Our legacy projects ensure that children understand the importance of developing a social conscience. We have many examples of these. Each legacy project enables the children to think about an aspect of life that they want to understand better, improve and challenge for change.

Our Restorative Justice approach empowers the children to create a respectful culture within the school. All upper school children are training in being Restorative Justice Ambassadors who have the skills to manage conflict and look for ways to resolve things. This ownerships helps them create the culture for positive attitudes, warmth, forgiveness and empathy. |
